How to obtain hard money lending

I'm wondering if anyone could tell me how I would/could go about getting financing from a hard money lender or a private money lender? I'm not sure the best way of finding these types of lenders in my area so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also, I would like to hear how some of you guys got financing for your first deal?
