Bandit Signs in Illegal areas

I'm a newbie investor and just launched my business and am thinking about putting out bandit signs. I checked with my city municipality and they said the bandit signs are illegal. I've heard a lot of people say they post their signs anyways but I'm not sure what to do. If I have a $1,000 a month budget for marketing (part of which goes to direct mail), is it worth it to put out signs that could be taken down a few days after I put them out? Any input is greatly appreciated! Thanks
