Can you do a 1031 Exchange for an auction property?

Can you do a 1031 Exchange for an auction property? Has anyone done a 1031 exchange at a foreclosure auction or any other type of auction? In most counties in my area you have until 5pm the day of the sale to pay for the property so I wasn't sure how that would work. Any info is appreciated...

Thank you both for the insight! Seems like it would be best to try a straight forward exchange first to get my feet wet then experiment with the tricky deals later...
