Could be graffiti, gang signs, boarded up houses, loose dogs, undesirable neighbors (for example if people are out on their porches and look less than appealing or are outside screaming and fighting), lots of trash all over, a bunch of ancient vehicles, a nearby business or something that omits a bad odor, etc.

If you've never read that book, it's a very good if somewhat dated piece about basics of personal finance and investing set in the historical backdrop of ancient Babylon. 

Maybe we will run into some ancient wise man in our travels who can clear it up, but for now, especially in this market it makes no sense to deal with all the drama.
