My goal is long term passive retirement income generation without capital disillusion using risk managed assets.I chose Ottawa to get started for a few reasons:1) I know a real estate agent and a property manager there that I trust. 2) It's a "steady Eddy" market, no huge ups and downs, which matches my investment goals. 3) Good exchange rate from USD to CAD for the down payment.4) I may someday retire there so wanted property in that market as a hedge against currency and real estate value changes.Reasons (1) and (2) made Ottawa a good place to start.

I don't know how it is with land lording there as I never rented my home that I had there out.. but I suspect the landlord has their rights.. the City I bought in Kelowna BC had tons of rentals so I know it happens  ( rent that is )  and boy the prices sky rocketed talk about an appreciation play.. wish I never sold my place but I did not want to be a distant landlord.. and I made 20k in a year on it with currency arbitrage and modest appreciation..

What are you seeing out there in your market I actually minor in economics and an investor in Stock and FOREX (currency, basically like stock market but instead of companies, you invest in countries).

I also play the FOREX market (currency, but instead of companies the whole country), that you have to get approved by banks since I control 1:400.

Your mix will vary depending on goals and risks.I had 50% in stocks over the past 10 years, and enjoyed the bull run.Now it is 70% in REI, 24% in equities/bonds/ETFs, 5% in Silver/Bullion, 1% crypto.

Laws and laws changing vs foreigners......think about all the foreigners who lost their property in Spain, Mexcio, and Venezuela.....law changes in Canada and Malaysia recently.Language and Customs.Lending/Currency ExchangeFACTA in the United States.It's just a start.
