As a matter of fact, William Avant was amongst some of the earliest settlers. He and other farmers began populating the area in 1835. 64 years later on a small farm his son Andrew Durham Avant built the Durham Avant House. Andrew died in Tool in 1929. He is buried in the Tool Cemetery. Legend has it that in the 1800’s it was not known as Tool. It was instead Hog Fork. The new name came in 1905 after the gentleman with the first store.
