Foreclosure

Hello, I have read on several different posts here and externally that it is both possible and impossible to wholesale a foreclosure. Can someone please clear this up for me? I do know that any offer using the clause "and/or assigns" will not be accepted by the bank. Without that how can we get paid on wholesaling foreclosures?
