Hello,
So I get a call this am this guy claiming to be working for the city. He is completely lying pissed I put a few signs up. Telling me the whole deal it is illegal blah blah blah. I am nice but feel like telling him where to go. Anyone have suggestions on avoiding this type of call or is it all just part of the fun.
And that's federal? What about all these fitness and diabetic signs I see everywhere? They sit there for ever. At least we only out them out on the weekend and pick them up.

My experience is that sign ordinances are county or city code compliance issues. Neither the regs nor the department would be at a courthouse in CA....unless it's a really small town where the city or county code division resides in the courthouse. Always try for online first. Then call around before going down to the courthouse. Could be in a totally different building. As it is for all my farms.
@Joseph Theriault This is one long thread! I read through the whole thing just to make sure someone gave you some great advice. There were some great ideas to help you out, and I learned some new things.
Sometimes people need to see that this forum is not to get on and force your opinion on others, or to ridicule what someone is doing,or to be the investor police.It's to offer valuable advice on the question asked to help someone out.
I especially liked the advice of just not answering the phone haha
But if we don't call someone out , who's doing something against the law, then that will tar all of us.
Real estate investors are already being looked at with suspicion , so, if we don't police the people who are doing wrong, then we are condoning the behavior and are part of the problem.
And having posts on this forum that ask for advice on how to do illegal practices hurts this forum, if the wrong-doing isn't pointed out.
@Michaela G. investors that are looked at with suspicion, are probably doing something suspicious. I have never had that problem when I let people know I am an investor. Most of the time they are curious,and want to know more.
While there may be some controversy on the use of bandit signs, they are commonly used by investors. The OP asked for some advice on how to avoid angry calls, he is not asking how to scam money from unsuspecting tenants. I am not here to judge others...if they are doing something illegal, the proper authorities in their local area will deal with it eventually.
I live in a small town, there are no laws against bandit signs because I am sure there never has been a whole lot of investors here, and I am pretty sure no one on this forum knows every law and ordinance from every municipality in the U.S. So if I asked the same question " How to avoid pissed off person calling about bandit signs?" all the people bringing in the legal advice, and personal opinions about these signs would be irrelevant, and I would get the most help from the person who suggested not to answer the phone :)
Richard C. and Mr. Ewing have no idea of the marketing tactic you are utilizing nor the fact that there is a world outside of the rock they live in with different laws and regulations. Yes, Richard, in YOUR sad state, there are laws against Bandit Signs being placed. So whether you are an honest business owner trying to serve a need or a family missing a dog, you are SOL to using any signage. I would consider the fact people come from a bigger world than your neighborhood when you make ignorant comments while trolling places you have no knowledge of. For you information and future understanding, many states allow it, though the city workers often do not like to see them and destroy them. There is a legal and proper way to do them and keep them nice and up to date. Those that do not do that for shame...with that said...on to your questions Joseph.
Sales is sales, and yes this is part of the game. Just look at Ewing and Richard C. who know nothing about us or the process we are talking about, but get angry for no reason on a matter that is bigger than them. If they will do that here, you will get it out there. It's just ignorance and part of being a business owner, let alone, one in sales, marketing, and investing. Just ignore the haters and be polite...take the higher road...and move on. They obviously don't want your business or do not have a need, so hang up and.....NEXT! Only focus on the ones that need help. The ones hating are not building a business or going anywhere in life, if they were they wouldn't have the time to call and bother you...let alone whine on some post that doesn't pertain to them!
