Best entry-level markets?

I'm a senior civil engineering major, looking to move with my soon-to-be wife after graduation. My plan is to eventually transition from civil engineering to real estate full time. Are there certain markets that are ideal for real estate investing right now, especially for a beginner? If so, where should I look? Any other advice for handling my student debt and beginning in my real estate journey?
