Frustrated with SEO Ranking

I've been putting a lot of effort into my rankings over the past year, and I'm really getting frustrated with my results. First it was google penguin that knocked me back from the 2nd spot for we buy houses in my market to 3rd and then I had to change everything from houses to homes because of the copyright bull for We Buy Houses.  This post isn't about them though, but what I want to know is why I look at my site at ahrefs.com and compare my stats vs my competitors why the heck are they ranking better than me when I have about triple to quadruple the backlinks, more of a social media presence, and just overall better content. It baffles me. 

If anyone wants to take a look as to clue me in if I'm doing something wrong I'd appreciate it.
