RE Investment Course?

Question

So I recently hooked up with a commercial RE investor. He suggested that I take a RE investment course. I, too, think it is a good idea. So I did some searching on BP and discovered the book by Ray Alcorn. My local community college also has an RE course which is more like what this guy was talking about. Do you think I would be better off taking the community college course or paying the $600 and reading the book? I'm leaning towards taking the course. I just know it's going to be a PITA to have transcripts sent over, etc for admissions. It's a shame I can't just take one course without having to go through all that stuff. Does anyone have another course that might be worthwhile?

This is mostly focused toward commercial RE. I think I'm past the beginner stuff. Personally I prefer a classroom just bc it forces me to practice it. I'm not opposed to a good book though or some type of online course.

It all depends on your learning style. Some work better in classroom style situations while others learn better on their own and are self-taught. Hope that helps!

Carl G. FIRST I'd read the Beginners Guide to Investing that's FREE, look under the Learn tab at top of page.

What is it you are hoping to accomplish by taking a course? If you are trying to learn the foundations of real estate (which I think is ALWAYS a great idea) I'd take a Real Estate Principles class online. In California that is the required course for getting a license. I'm sure Texas has something similar.

Learning the "process" of buying property, understanding contracts, escrow, title, etc. is something that will be invaluable for you.

Are you looking for something that helps you analyze properties, etc.? Once again, you can find all of that right here on BP, and so much more. In reality, if someone were to make up a list of topics to study, come on BP everyday, and search out those topics, then study them, you be amazed by what you can learn, from people with hands on experience!

Before going out and spending your hard earned money, make sure you're taking a class that you actually need, and one that cannot be found for free or cheaper. More money doesn't mean it's better.
