I'm New! Online Real Estate School?

Question

Hello,

I am excited to be a part of the Bigger Pockets community!  I am new to Real Estate. I have read a few books and read a little about Real Estate principles in California. I am now moving to Tennessee and would like to take an online RE course and get my real estate license to become an agent but also invest as I learn more and gain confidence.

I would appreciate any suggestions & reviews on online real estate courses.

Any other expertise or advice is very much appreciated!

@Kim Sparks if you are in Nashville you need to keep company with real estate people in Nashville and start to build you network. You can find meet up in BP, but the best place to network is at Real Estate investors of Nashville (REIN).  @Brandon Turner of BP spoke at one of our meeting last month (it was so awesome). Go to REINTN.org and check out events. Tuesday night this week is a really good meeting called (Deals, Deals, Deals).  I hope to see you there.

Hi Kim, you and I are in a similar boat. When I first came to Biggerpockets my ultimate goal was (and still is) to build a buy-and-hold multifamily rental portfolio. The factors limiting my growth were access to liquid cash, and not understanding the micro points of a real estate transaction.

For example: We all understand REI from a macro level- 1) find deal 2) make offer 3) negotiate terms 4) close. But how do I submit an offer? Can I just type it up in Word? How do I open an escrow account? Where do I go to "close"? Will the bank deposit the loan in my personal checking account??

These things seem silly- but understanding the nuts and bolts of the whole process will give you tremendous confidence as you begin closing your own deals.

I decided to get my license using an online course because it solved both of my problems- cash and knowledge. The commissions I earn from representing buyers/sellers will be added to my REI war chest, and going through the course and seeing deals close first-hand from start to finish is an exceptional way to learn/ boost confidence.

^^ That was my long-winded way of saying I think getting your license is a good idea and I wish you luck in your new adventure. haha

Are you looking to take a course to get your real estate license or to learn how to become a real estate investor?   Those are two very different things.

If you want to become an investor, I recommend Lifestyles Unlimited.  I've been a member since 2011.  They have lots of online classes, but also live in-person events.   Most of their live events are in Texas but they are expanding nationally.  For years my wife and I have been flying to Dallas and Houston to attend events.

@Roger Poulin Thanks for the recommendation on joining REIN. I had another mention that group to me as well so it's definitely something I will look into. Since I am California for a few weeks I will need to wait until I arrive back into Tennessee but I look forward to it. Thanks again!
