I think you can be successful with almost anything you do. What works for me, is to do what I enjoy. That way it does not feel like a work and makes me work really hard for it, even when times get tough. Focus on one thing and do it really well. 

It really comes down to your own preference, personality and willingness to do different things. I enjoy doing BRRRR. There are other ways I could make more money, but I would not enjoy it as much. So I just make the most out of this and has been working real well for me. There are some parts I don't enjoy however, so I just pay others to do it for me and just do the parts that i like. Beginnings were hard though. I end up doing a lot. But as you build your business, you can afford to start being more picky about how you spend your time.
