Framing new roof over and addition

Folks, please guide me through the following. I have a house with addition and the ceiling in this addition is too low. I am planning to vault it. I have a flat roof and I think that either gabled or elevated flat will be a solution. What should be my steps? I would like to hire subcontractors and not GC. Where do I start? Do I need to have plans or I should directly go to a framing company?

@Kate J. Some jurisdictions require structural drawings by an architect or engineer. Others you can do a design build with a GC.  You should start with your city or county and find out what the requirements will be. Then you can proceed with the design as needed by the appropriate professional.

My advice is do not try to tackle a project like this without using a qualified GC. They will save you in the long run.
