Contractors do this right or cutting corners?
The contractors are just about done with the rehab of a house I just purchased. They redid the siding and I noticed there is a gap here between the siding and the roof with this metal layer visible underneath. I've never noticed this at a house before and have no idea if they did this right or not. Any one who knows construction could you give me your opinion?
Thanks!

Yes, it looks correct. You're looking at 'step flashing' ethics is a piece of metal bent up for each course of shingles. If you look at it closely, one layer overlaps the one below it.
As others have said, you don't want the siding directly in contact with the roof as you'll have a place for moisture to collect.
You could see if they could put a small drip edge (long aluminum piece) down the edge of the siding to hide it a bit more, but it's more aesthetic than anything else.
