Returns are based on risk. The safest investment offers lowest return, riskier investments offer higher return. It is about finding a balance that matches your risk tolerance and matches your life situation. If you are in your 20's, you can afford to be riskier than if you are in your 70's. There are low risk bonds if safe and secure is your main goal. If you are looking for higher return, you can invest in stock market index fund or REITS. If you directly invest in real estate, the returns are higher. Risk is higher mainly because it relies on your skill and intelligence to be successful in real estate. Many people are just not good at managing real estate. On the flip side, successful real estate investors don't consider it risky. My personal perspective is that my single family rental homes carry far less risk than my stock market investments. I say that because I have no control over the stock market, but I do self manage my single family homes.
The absolute safest investment is certificate of deposits or savings accounts that are FDIC insured, but they pay sub 1% return.
