New Investor Doing Research

Hi all, I'm looking to being REI. I'm based in NYC but given prices in the area, probably looking outside to other regions in NY to invest. It seems like where to buy your first property is my biggest question. I've seen some places on LI that could probably give me some cash flow but it looks tight. On the other hand it seems like a lot of investors are Upstate in areas like Rochester, but I don't want to get into C class properties and I'm not familiar with the area at all. Any advice on good places for beginners to invest, or more generally on how to choose where to buy your first investment? TIA
