Month long stays in STRs: finding hidden gems

Brittany Horton
Posted

My BF and I live in SF and will both be working remotely for the next 6 months at least. We're considering ditching our SF apartment ($4k/mo rent) and instead booking month-long stays in short term rentals around the country. Once we have to return to our offices part-time, we could continue the STR rental plan but stay within driving distance to SF. This would also allow us to explore local neighborhoods to choose where we'll eventually want to buy our first home.

The main way I know how to search for STRs that allow monthly stays is through the usual suspects (AirBnB, VRBO) but I'm wondering if there are other sites or sources where I might find high quality homes.

I know a lot of members here have STR properties - do you mainly list on these sites? Is there an "unlisted" sourcing method? Or a community of people who might be interested in having monthly guests but don't want to list on AirBnB?

And, if there's anyone who has done something like this and has tips, I'm all ears. Thanks!
