What would you do given this situation?

My wife is a travel nurse whose current contract ends in May. I have 17k in liquid capital for my next investment, or investments, so there is a very real possibility that we may base where we go next on real estate investing. Given that situation (unlimited mobility and limited funds) Where would you go and what would you do? I've though about rehabbing an selling, or movIng to whatever area of the country is the absolute most conducive to aquiring properties with a buy and hold strategy in mind. What would you do given this REI dream scenario?
