Just can't help myself on this one. Article out of Chicago today and front page here in Ft Myers . Fl. You've probably noticed all the fat kids walking around these days. I know why!! Food stamps.
12% of kids in my county are currently on food stamps. Not bad.
Nationwide, 50% of all kids will be on food stamps during their childhood. It is even worse among certain segments of the population. NINETY % of the African American kids will be on food stamps some time during their childhood.
How about killing 2 birds with one stone.. Cut back on food stamps and kids will get skinnier!! Seems so simple to me. It is probably not possible , now that we have so many depending on the stamps to keep from starving.. Rich, an ex very fat person.
p.s. Yes, I know there is a certain % that need the help.....
Regarding global warming, the evidence in support of it is much greater than the evidence against it. It is always possible that we are going through a temporary period of random temperature increase, but we should base our decisions on the most likely explanation as opposed to remotely possible ones.

I grew up on food stamps but I was super skinny b/c the food sucked!!
back then my mother used to have to get the powder milk and the government cheese. Now days I believe they get better choices. I've been at a convenience store where the family in front of me had all candy and they paid with their food stamp card.
Nowadays I'm fat because my wife feeds me really well and I'm just lazy but no food stamps
Maybe we should allow food stamps to only be used to buy produce. That should reduce calorie consumption.

But global warming does not mean that all parts of the world will be warmer. It just means that the average temperature will be higher. Whether the place you live in will become warmer or colder will depend on a number of factors and scientists do not know enough to predict that.
Here's an article from the Woods Hole institute that speculates that the North-Eastern part of North America and the Western part of Europe will actually become colder due to global warming.

But how about this one...
If 50% of American kids are going to be on food stamps at some point in their childhood, why not just encourage half of the country's parents to abort their children...then we won't have anyone on food stamps!!!
I'm pretty sure my argument makes as much logical sense as yours...between our combined ideas of cutting back on food stamps and encouraging abortion, we should really be able to help the poor (and over-weight) in this country...
State governments in states like california with it's obscene property values should levy extra taxes on properties over $120k to help put it's financial house in order.
No but what they should do is legalize Marijuana,, grow it openly and tax the hell out of it. By the way talking about "obscene property value" Have you checked the property value in Oahu lately?
Vikram- I like your idea on having the food stamps only used for produce. Maybe expand it a wee bit. Mirror the WIC program. Milk, cheese, etc. If it is good for the youngins, maybe it would also be good for the youth.
At least emliminate the cigarrettes and alcohol. Those aren't too good for stamps to be used for. Those items probably still aren't to useful for our youth, imo. Rich in FL.
Cutting back on food stamps will not reduce weight.
In fact, it would have the opposite effect. The less money one has to spend on food, the more fattening the diet is.
A good diet costs a lot of money. If a family on foodstamps can only afford to eat boiled rice with margerine, their kids are not going to be as healthy as mine, who eats baked boneless skinless chicken breast, steamed vegetable, and a nice green salad with fresh fruit for desert. Shopped lately? That healthy diet costs a packet of $ at the grocery check-out. Fresh veg cost as much, or more, than meat.
Oregon offers a great food assistance program for young children. It's a debit card and can only be used for specific healthy food items that are appropriate for a young child. You can buy bananas. You can not buy candy or soda.
Debit cards at least cut back on the favorite welfare cheat of buying a $1 item with food coupons and then using the change to pay for ciggies and booze.
With all the computerization of store check-out, it's very possible to limit food stamp purchases to healthy items. (but then you are going to have to teach all those welfare people how to cook)
On the news: Costco is going to start accepting food stamps.

Fact - A can of soda cost less (Much less) then a bottle of water of the same size. Food corporations are allowed to run wild in this country. They spend obscene amount of money to market junk and campaign against taxes on corn syrup laden soda poison. Cereal is the biggest food fraud in the country!!! Corn is the biggest poison there is!!! I once worked with a Special effects guy who was a police officer for twenty years in Kentucky prior to become an Effects man on movies. He told me that during his all carrier as a police officer, he couldn't remember being called for even one act of violence done under the influence of Marijuana. He continue to say that he lost count of those calls regarding violence acts committed under the influence of Alcohol...

Therefore, he clearly believes that there shouldn't be any laws against people doing what they want (including drugs and alcohol) in the privacy of their own home.
How can you be a conservative and not want drugs to be legalized (as well as the repealing of all other laws that impede personal freedoms)?

I'm not sure. If I remember correctly my golden years (Although some people say that if you remember your "golden years" you probably weren't there... :wink: ) Marijuana, actually suppresses your apatite...

So Eddie, you are asking us to base our conclusions in regards to controlled substance policy on the casual observations of ONE law enforcement officer.
Did that law enforcement officer also perform tests on each person to determine that he/she only consumed marijuana or only consumed alcohol and not any other controlled substance?
Would the fact that alcohol is legal and is (unfortunately) sold in bars often to excess to young, testosterone filled males contribute to the violence?
Would you prefer to hire a habitually drunk electrician or one that was habitually stoned?
I feel that we are headed towards some level of decriminalization. Too bad we can't require stoners and drunks to wear a badge that says "I'm stoned (drunk) and my condition will affect my performance and my relationship with those around me."
Kevin, You're missing the point. You are talking about abuse and I was talking about use. My argument was that it is hypocritical to have alcohol as a legal substance while keeping Marijuana illegal. When it comes to abuse, anything can be abused including pharmaceutical drugs. The reason I brought the example is to make a case that in event of abuse, alcohol is far more troubling than Marijuana. The only reason we have alcohol legal in this country is because of tradition. I'm not a proponent of making alcohol illegal. History shows that, that attempt was fruitless. I believe, and the number support it, that where is a demand, there is a supply, legal or not. The "war on drug" is a joke that doesn't make you laugh. It is one of the the biggest waste of money and resources.
Let the govt. be in charge of doleing out the weed. They're in charge of doleing out everything else. Might as well complete the circle. Rich ,,,,in cambodia.

Eddie, I agree with you that that allocating so many resources to battle the use and abuse of marijuana seems unbalanced with the results.
You are missing my point that coming to a conclusion based on one observation point (one law enforcement officer's recollections) is a poor way to establish a position on such an issue.
That would be like saying "I know a guy who tried fixing and flipping REO properties and lost a lot of money doing it. Therefore, no one should be allowed to fix & flip."
