The article is pretty accurate picture of what it was like growing up. I feel like it is a sad story that is repeating itself around the nation as communities try to deal with the changing realities of the economy.

Sad stuff Rusty. Like you say, all too common and lots of small Oregon towns like this. Need some well heeled retirees to invest and build communities.

I think some creative use of town assets could bring resources into these failing towns. Over the next decades assisted living facilities will be booming. I'm sure there are a lot of older generations who would rather spend there last years in some of these smaller towns.

I already know of a number of people who've chosen to retire in Oregon...Especially Californians (your worst nightmare as an Oregonian, I'm sure) who want to stretch their retirement dollars and don't need to be in an employment center, and those who are tired of living in a drought state. I have a feeling that the tide will turn for small towns in Oregon over the next couple of decades.
