Newbie from Bakersfield, CA

Hi all! My name is Tom H. and my wife Wendy and I are newbies here in Bakersfield, CA where we're on our 30th straight day of 100 deg weather (seems like it anyway)! I am 55, tired of my career in the oil & gas business and want to supplement my retirement (hope to retire in 5 or 6 years) with passive income from real estate investments.

We came to this site via a recommendation from a good friend who has been a member for approximately a year and gave raving reviews of the site and how much it has helped him in his real estate business.

We are looking to invest in single family homes or 2, 3, 4 or 5 plex apartments in the Bakersfield area and really have no idea on where to begin. We both have lots of energy and ability and look forward to interacting with many of you on this site!

Hi Tom,

Bakersfield is a GREAT market. I have the majority of m y portfolio in that market. Since 2008 the market has already appreciated 40-50% and still has room to grow IMO. I still think it is a good time to get in, but I would move quickly. Mutli family pencils nicely on paper, but as you know, not all zip codes are created equal. Make sure you to time to learn the market overall and sub markets, figure out the areas you are comfortable investing in and start working toward your overall goal of passive income.
