New Guy - Austin, TX
Hello,
My name is Josh Gatlin, I am a Junior studying Finance and Economics with a Real Estate focus at the University of Texas at Austin. I joined the site because of the awesome educational value it provides especially to a young investor. I have been a licensed realtor working for a commercial real estate company out of downtown Austin and am looking to make my first investment purchase soon since I have spent the last year advancing my knowledge of the Austin real estate market. I look forward to growing my knowledge through everyone's respective expertises. If you have any advice on career paths coming out of college I would love to hear your advice. I am looking to get a new internship for a larger commercial real estate company than my current one working in Investment Banking, as a financial analyst, or possibly doing capital market research. By doing this, I hope to open up possibilities to enter the real estate Private Equity field later on down the road but my main goal is to find a job that puts me in a position to learn as much as possible and prepares me the most to eventually succeed in starting my own real estate investment company. I feel putting myself in position to maximize my growth and knowledge in the industry will pay off more in the long run than simply looking for maximizing my salary. Again, any advice would be welcome. I look forward to becoming involved in the site and learning from everyone.

Welcome to BP man I graduated from UT in 09 with a degree in Philosophy, lol now I invest in Real Estate. You're on the right path as far starting super early that's great man. You will get a lot of advice from the Austin people on BP but you might want to ask some more specific questions about what specifically you want to do in Real Estate. (Flip, long term holds, short term hold then flip? or maybe even wholesaling, residential or commercial etc...) I feel like a lot of what you learn in school, capital markets, etc...is really more useful for making other people money than for making yourself money. The practical skills you will learn as a commercial agent and from actually doing deals yourself will likely be much more valuable than your degree so it's great that your already started in gaining those skills. Feel free to hit me up if you have any questions.
