Newbie interested in Decatur, GA

Nam-June Joe

Hi BP Community,

I’m a first-time investor from New Jersey with excellent credit and most of my savings/investments in stocks and funds. I’m planning to purchase a 3–5 unit multifamily property in the Decatur, GA area by September 2025 or 2026. My daughter attends Emory University and will live in one unit while I rent out the others.

I’d love any neighborhood recommendations (in addition to Decatur) that are still conveniently accessible to Emory by foot, bike, or public transportation. If anyone can suggest an investor-friendly agent in the area, I’d really appreciate it.

Beyond finding a great agent, what steps can I take now to continue educating myself and preparing for this purchase? Looking forward to connecting with the BP community and learning from your experiences!

Thank you in advance,
Nam

@Nam-June Joe

You're in a strong position with excellent credit and a clear plan for purchasing a 3–5 unit multifamily property near Emory University. In addition to Decatur, consider areas like Druid Hills, Kirkwood, and East Lake, which offer good rental demand and accessibility to Emory. To prepare, start networking with investor-friendly agents, analyze local rental markets, and get familiar with financing options for multifamily properties.

Good luck!
