My stride towards freedom

Deshaun Wilson
Posted

Hello everyone my name Is Deshaun Wilson, and thank you for allowing me to join bigger pockets. I'm 21 about to turn 22 and my goal is to reach financial freedom. I want to build my way there through rentals and as time progresses, I plan on building multiple other streams of income down the road outside of realestate.

A little about me:

I graduated high school in 2020 at 17 and as soon as I turned 18, I went to work underground utility construction. I worked in the field for about 3 years and that's where I began to get interested in realestate. Being on all those different upcoming subdivisions I asked a lot of questions and learned a bit, but I knew I wasn't making enough to get started with my realestate journey. But now I'm a local truck driver, though the funding isn't what I'd prefer it's better then what it was. So I'm now beginning to reach out and see what need to be done to escape the rat race.

I am currently living with family, I was wanting to use my first time home buyer to purchase a multi-family for my first home and stay in a unit while renting the others to start gaining some passive income. And honestly I'm kinda worried about how it all goes due to my current lack of knowledge, but I'll do my best to make it work out no matter what. I look forward to working with everyone and I look forward to a new chapter of learning and freedom.

Thank You

Hello @Deshaun Wilson and welcome to BiggerPockets!

Man!!... this post got me fired up! I did not have your mentality at 21.

I'd say you are headed in the right direction with the strategy you are considering - househacking.

You'll be able to use a low-down payment option, learn to manage properties, create systems for managing maintenance projects, have your tenants pay most or all of your mortgage,... the list goes on.

There will definitely be hurdles but like you said...you'll make it work!

While a lot of what you'll learn will be from experience, I do think there are some resources to increase your knowledge base and give you more confidence as you take your next steps.

One book I'd highly recommend starting with is The book on managing rental properties

That book will help you tremendously.

Plenty of other books and resources out there but if your short-term goal is to get started with property #1, I'd start with that book and others from the BiggerPockets bookstore.

All the best!

Abel
