Rejecting Applicants

I just took the plunge and purchased and renovated my first SFH to rent. I have an applicant with a violent criminal offense in the fairly recent past that I want to deny on that basis, and I want to do it legally and smoothly. None of the denial forms seem to have a box to check for denial on that basis. I'm wondering if I should pencil it in the "other reasons" section or run a background check and try to deny based on other criteria (I've yet to run a credit check or take a fee). I am in California.

Thanks in advance for any help you folks might have
