Craig’s list renter scams

Does anyone know about any renter scams on Craig’s list and how to detect them? If they are promising money and mailing a check what is their endgame? I’m looking for a roommate or 2 and I got 3 similar candidates that say similar stories. They say they want to finish their masters degree and that their dad is going to be paying the fees and rent. Any advice?

My guess would be that the age old scam- they mail you a check for too much, and ask you to refund the difference.  They cash your good check, days later their bad check bounces.
