Do I need an inspection before renting a house?

I have just found tenants to rent my primary residence in the Hartford, CT area. Before I sign the lease with them, a friend from St Louis, MO mentioned that I might need to have an occupancy inspection. This is not anything that I was aware of, but I wondered if I could get this information from a bigger pockets investor.

Depends on how liberal the state/city is. More conservative areas leave the quality of the property up to the two parties that matter: the person buying the product (renter) and the person selling the product (property owner)

In a more liberal area, big government comes in to "protect" renters by charging home owners for a piece of paper that says they've been blessed by the state and given permission to rent their house out.
