When you buy a duplex to rent it out, do you have to pay home insurance? Im pretty new and trying to learn as much as i can

Generally it is required to buy home insurance. In the case your house is burned by fire or gets blown down from a tornado as in the case of here in kansas city, your home insurance is there to rebuild everything. This is to protect you AND the tenant.

I would also recommend that you tell your tenant to purchase their own renter's insurance because YOUR home insurance most likely will not cover their stuff in case of a flood or lose. It should only cost the tenant no more than $10/month or so.
