Termites Found After Renting

I recently just moved out of a property after renting it for 3 years. The final 6 months while living there, we were under no formal lease and just paying month to month with no actual lease contract. The lease contract also did not speculate anything about the tenants responsibility for pest control, while we did he a vague verbal agreement about "either tenant or renter will be around to get the pest control guy here."

The landlord and I observed some damages during our final walkthrough to the wooden floors (extensive...caused by AC unit), that I caved in a paid him around $5000 in damages, just to be safe.

Calls me back two weeks after he moved back in...unrelated to the floors...termites have infested two walls that may have to come down. He's expecting me to pay additional damages for the termite infestation, claiming it was my fault the termite guy hadn't come around in the last 4-5 months (I had been on deployment-military).

Any advice on the matter? Is it my responsibility? Should we be splitting it? Nervous about the cost...thank you for whatever direction anyone can provide.
