Renter wants to put a punching bag in the basement

Hi guys,

My renter wants to hang a punching bag on the steel ibeam in the basement. He's been a very good renter, nice guy, and the rent I get from him is very good, so I try to keep him happy but I'm concerned about structural problems if he's pounding away at the bag everyday. Is it a very bad idea or is there some type of installation that will minimize the impact of the bag.

Personally, I'd let him install it and I'd be glad that he even asked first. Not all tenants would have.

even a $200# punching bag and a big guy pounding away daily should not do a thing o a properly structure steel I beam....

Being an i-beam, I would say it will hold. But, you could also have the tenant pay for a pro to look at it seeing how it's more of a perk for the tenant. Or possibly there's additional support besides the i-beam?

@Roy Gutierrez we have a heavy bag in our basement and properly mounted it isn't a issue and we don't have a steel beam. The only issue i could see if its a duplex and there is crossover noise. good to see you let him do it.

I agree with Kyle. I'm shocked he even asked. He sounds like a really good tenant.

He can buy punching bags with their own stand that do not attach to your property.

He is a good tenant, I like the point that better a punching bag than the walls! I guess I'm going to be punching that bag as well, I got invited for a workout!

I have a heavy bag in the basement of my primary, properly secured between two floor joists. I can hang on it and there're no issues. Although when you're hitting it the whole house knows.
Good for you for letting a good tenant have a perk, and good for him for asking.

Just want to chime in with a personal experience.... I remember as a kid we put a punching bag in the garage. Read all the install directions properly and everything seemed fine. Once we started punching we noticed the ENTIRE TOP STORY of the home felt like it was in an earthquake. Not sure what everyone's living situation is at your tenants home but I would be aware of this. It was not something that you would get used to eventually, things would fall off tables and pictures would fall off the wall.
