Roth to self directed IRA

Is a Roth IRA only able to convert to a self directed IRA, rather than a self directed 401K? Is the checkbook option the preferred method for real estate acquisition?

Rita, you are correct. Roth IRA can be converted into self-directed Roth IRA, however IRS does not allow rollover of Roth IRA into 401k. If you are eligible for it you can establish truly self-directed Solo 401k which has very generous contribution limits including up to $24K/yr into Roth.
