REI Podcasts Turning into Pitchfests

I have a long commute to work so I listen to a lot of different REI Podcasts. I realize the people doing the Podcasts do so at a cost (time and money) and for that I feel like it is fair they be allowed to pitch some of their product to me. Over a year ago I noticed there were hardly any commercials during most of the REI Podcast episodes. Lately I have noticed a tremendous increase in the amount of pitching/commercials. There some REI Podcasts episodes that are 15 - 20 minutes in length but have a commercial every 4-5 minutes. There are some that have 3 minute commercials several times in a 30 minute show. I quit listening to my music on my local radio stations because I hated hearing 2 songs and 4 commercials, lol.

I welcome some amount of product pitching but I hope REI Podcasts don't turn into "Pitchfests". Anyone else notice the increase of pitching/commercials in REI Podcasts over the past year? What are your thoughts on it?

    Unfortunately, the real estate industry has been dominated by gurus and pitchfests for a long time. Indeed, I think that's the reason Josh started BiggerPockets in the first place.

    There is a simple and logical reason behind this. Whatever podcast you are listening to has probably grown it's audience to finally garner the attention of advertisers. But just look at it this way....you are in a business where you are going to have to do a lot of marketing....so just accept the fact that you are also in turn going to be marketed to.  Also learn what you can from that marketing.  Studying their marketing and advertisement as much as you listed to the other stuff and see how you can adapt those marketing techniques for yourself.

    I didn't know they were pumping commercials in between podcasts now. There used to not be anything back in the day. Then they added a message from our sponsor at the beginning I believe awhile back.

    So now Daren you are saying they take breaks every so many minutes like a radio show and have commercials??

    I haven't listened to Podcasts in a very long time. Most of them cover flipping a house, buying a rental house, house hacking. A majority of subscribers are just getting going with R.E. so it makes sense to target that kind of investor.

    None of it has the kind of content I am interested in which is more advanced topics but that is only a small part of BP. I still look at Podcasts occasionally maybe every few months. Now I am more focused on reading advanced specialty books on the cloud I can only find on Amazon.

    Yes, a lot more ads these days but not full blown like typical radio shows. As individual podcast audiences grow, I think there will be a lot more of it. Some take commercial breaks and pitch stuff like hard money lenders, business credit, virtual assistants, landlord services, deal partnering, websites, marketing services, home security devices, etc. Some just pitch their sponsors once and they are done. I get it and I am not mad about it, but their is definitely an uptick in the pitching and I see more in the future. All free things come to an end, lol.

    I like picking up little tips from the guest speakers. I tend to look for REI episodes on topics I am interested in or not familiar with. I listen to a lot of audio books (on Audible) to get away from the REI podcasts. Lately I have been into topics on economic policy, fed reserve, and the monetary system. I am currently listening to The Death of Money. Wish I had gotten into this stuff in my early twenties!!
