Hi,
I'm in the process of selling my first residential property and want to know if an attorney is essential to have for this process? If so, what does an attorney actually do when selling a property and what is a typical fee for that service? Thanks!

Hey Isaac, usually the attorney plays more of a role in the paperwork and making sure everything is above board on the transaction. You would do more of the marketing (if you don't have an agent). They are usually about $2500 here in Oregon, but not sure about Columbus.

An attorney ‘executes’ the contract, taking inputs (contract, title, funds), and generating the desired outcome. In my area a seller pays ~2k. I always use one for either side of the deal.

Some states require an attorney to close the transaction. Other states do not. Here in Oregon and Washington, it's not required for an attorney to close. We real estate brokers do all the work and facilitate through a title/escrow process. Check what your state requires.
