Converting a single family into a duplex

Hi BP community. I wanted to see if anyone in Houston TX has had experience with converting a SFR into a duplex. How difficult is it when it comes to the city and permits? And also how costly is separation of utilities? Would it be worth the trouble?

This an idea that popped into my head recently and I know I need to do a lot of research on it but I thought I'd start here and get some pointers. I'd love to hear your thoughts/experiences.

Thanks in Advance.

@Marzieh Rostami I own a contracting company in Houston. If you wanted to get it chopped up through the city that can take some time and you would need to get approval. Also depending on where you live you would need to make sure your HOA allows for it. Note that many of the properties in Heights and Montrose were chopped without city approval (hence the 1/2s for unit/building numbers). I have never worked with the city on doing this.

Depending on what you need on contracting the price will vary. Most likely you need at least one more kitchen and not sure the bathroom situation or what walls need to be added.
