I am looking at buying my first two family home. I found a property that I am interested in but it has knob and tube wiring. I would like to hear about how people tackle that issue. Do you rewire the whole house or just get rid of in the basement? What is a reasonable price to pay? I can provide more details as needed.
This happened at my duplex. The cost wasn't bad - I had knob & tube removed and some additional electrical work done (added some outlets, added/moved some light switches, added a few wall lights, etc.) and it came out to under 2K (luckily my electrician is very reasonable - $40 an hour).
As far as I know they removed all the knob & tube VIA the basement.
I had to have the knob & tube removed before I could get insurance on the property - if your insurer is similar and you buy the property then try and have the electrician lined up in advance so there's no delay.

It all needs to be removed. It is a fire hazard. The insulation isn't designed to last 50 years on it and if you insulate it acts as a conductor and will catch fire. You probably have two prong receptacles with no ground also. Perhaps Zinsco breakers or fuses? Zinsco has been out of business since the mid 70's. Even worse would be if they updates the panel and plugs and not the wire.
Wow Karl, only $2k to remove it from the entire duplex? I am possibly running into the same issue having to have it removed from a duplex but Im reading quotes up to $10k.

Not sure what part of the country you are from but that is more in line with the price. It might even be considered cheap depending on where it actually is.
