free internet for apartment residents?
Hello all! So here I am nearing the completion of a 20 unit extensive rehab and now faced with yet another hurdle...internet/TV/phone for the residents!
The apartments were built in 1972 and are located in a semi rural area that never had a service from a large cable company. What I found was a hodgepodge mess of aged coax cable, phone lines and tv antenna wires, all of which were assumed to be questionable and therefore abandoned. I started exploring the available options to bring the apartments into the digital age and found very limited options available. Of course satellite TV is available but really don't want dishes everywhere...ATT has old copper wires there for phone service that barely provide enough speed to do anything. After looking at all the options it looks like the best option is a small independent broadband cable company that will only become an option after they bring their lines to my property. Sounds simple, but in order for that to happen they want a 5 year commitment from me to install internet in all 20 apartments. They will provide modems for each apartment and provide all the coax cable...i'm responsible for contracting the installation of the cable into the buildings at a cost of about $65 per apartment. This 5 year commitment is providing high speed internet at $25-$30 a month per unit. This is much lower than a resident can obtain on their own. So, i'm faced with $500-$600 a month for 5 years and will either be providing "free" internet or adding it on top of the rent. Has anyone ever been faced with a situation like this?
