new at this
I work in human services making garbage money with a BA in English. I have about 2000 dollars saved up in the bank. I live in MA and I am willing to look for apartments or multi-family houses instate or out of state. I was thinking of buying a foreclosure for 30k-50k which is a couple hundred a month in mortgage and living in it for a year....does anyone think this is a good or bad idea? brutal honesty appreciated!!!

That may get you started in my area (PA) where a turnkey rental (done, rented and with management in place) would run you about $65,000. Sometimes less, sometimes seller financed. It may not be doable in New England, but in Northeastern (Scranton) PA it's not hard.
