Buying foreclosures...how

Doing a search there seems to be many site that have foreclosed homes, many ask for money and some are free.

Which ones are legit and updated. I live in Maryland, are there any sites you can advise on for this area?

Is it better to work directly with a bank? A certain website or with realtors?
