Does it make sense?

Question

Does it make sense to go over board decorating or should I say "add value" to a home you never intend to sell? I know of a certain someone who goes too far with decorations to the inside  and outside of the house. Most of this stuff is inside decorations that does not necessarily add value to the property as whole.

Bryan Hennen I can't tell you how many times I wanted to let her know what I really think of her decorations, but held it back to be nice to mom. I couldn't care less how the house is decorated. It's not my house, so I honestly don't care. Some of the stuff she does is not all that appealing to me anyway like when she paints the kitchen cabinets the same old dull color she has been painting for the past however many years. I lost count on that one. I just think it is totally annoying and she needs to stop.  I remember one time her uncle was suppose to come to visit from Ohio. She worked herself crazy just to have to house looking good all to impress him. And guess what? He never came by the house to visit. Why? Because while he was supposedly coming to visit, she was out in California visiting he sister. That was for mostly the whole summer of 2011 when all this took place. It gets even more annoying to me when she works herself so hard fixing up the place to impress others when she don't have to. She makes herself suffer with all this hard work she does and walk around tired and stressed out like she want sympathy for having to do all the hard work that no one made her do. I never sympathize with her for doing this.

I had an employee that was very much like this. She had to show me everything she did and wanted me to tell her how good she did. Some people just need those exterior accolades and praise.

Consider yourself lucky, she could be just the opposite. She could let her house fall into disrepair and not care what others think.

Just make mom happy and tell her it looks nice.

Bill Gulley You show pride in ownership of your properties? You are mistaken. As I told the others, it is not me that is doing this and I am definitely not the one showing ownership. This is my parent's house and my mom is the one going too far with all this fix up on a house she plan to live in for the rest of her years. And once again like I told the others, all this fix up is nothing but a front to impress others. She never goes out of her way to do all this decorating because she wanted to do it.  I'm telling you had this been me I wouldn't waste all my time doing this unless it is a benefit to me. I don't benefit from fixing up a house the way she does only for me to look at. I would do the basic stuff to keep the house looking neat, but I won't go way too far with it if I don't plan to sell or rent the house.

Geeez, I had an ex who did those things, no kitchen rugs, but curtains, doesn't hurt anything. You show pride in ownership of your properties and your tenants are more likely to as well! :)

Chad Heard This is my parents house and my mom is doing all this fix up. They plan to spend the rest of their lives living in this home, so I still don't get why work so hard to add value to a home you plan to live in for the rest of your years.  Everyone is different, but I know had it been me I would only do all this fixing up to help sell the house for profit or sell it to help move me into a better home.

I agree with Bill. The answer is: " It depends."  If this property is going to be a rental, you don't want to go over board.  I think that the wise question to ask is, " What is the value of doing all of these decorations ?" What is there to gain from doing these decorations as opposed to not doing them?

Bill Gulley I am talking about kitchen table cloth, repainting the kitchen the same old color for the past several years, putting new kitchen rugs on the floor,  new kitchen curtains, and adding new bathroom shower curtains.

Sam W. She only does all this for compliments and attention. Actually it's my mom who does all this. She will go way over board for special occasions when relatives from out of town come to visit once a year. She never fix up the place just for her because she like it. She does it for compliments. She loves to hear someone say how nice the house looks, which is all she ever wants anyway. If people come over and not pay any attention to how nice the house looks due to all her hard work nor pay any compliments to the new decorations she added to the house, she don't like it too much. When ever she get in the moods to do all this cleaning and decorating (not for her by the way) the first thing she wants to do is come to me and ask how I like what she has done. I promise you if no one cared for how fixed up the house is she wouldn't feel the need to strive so much because no one is impressed with what she has done and all for the sake of compliments.

Seems to me this "certain someone" is decorating her/his house the way they like it.

In my mind, going overboard in decorating ONLY makes sense if you don't intend to sell (as is the case you have described)....so you get to enjoy the fruits of your labors (and money spent).
