Wholsaling real estate is a business just like any other retail biz.  Buy low sell higher. In this case you don't actually become the owner you just sell an agreed upon price to some one else.

Just like other businesses it can be very profitable. Listen to the higher pockets podcast and you will run into a good handful of folks who make great money wholsaling. But truth be told most of them use the money to invest in real estate. Buy and hold, flip, or notes. Passive income is the goal. Wholsaling is the means to get there.

Definitely check out the education tab. You will find a lot of good and helpful information there about wholesaling. The knowledge there is endless. To my experience, I will say that yes, there is money to be made. The point really depends on what your goals are with real estate. For example, you can wholesale to build the capital to buy and flip homes or you can just wholesale to generate the income that pleases you. Those are just two examples of why you would want to wholesale. The basics to wholesaling is basically, in my own way of explaining it, flipping contracts. You are saving the investor time by finding the homes. You find the deals for other investors for a fee.

Finding off-market motivated owners who might let their homes go for a lot less than retail is a (no guaranteed income) JOB. And depending on which States you market said properties in (without paying for them first), it can be classed as Brokering Real Estate without a License, with hefty fees applicable if you get sprung (unless you GET that License first)!
