Tree Removal (Denver) - Any Recommendations?

Dear BP Denver Members,

Does anyone have a good recommendation for a tree removal company in Denver?  Our property management company provided us with one quotation, from a tree "preservation" company, and it was about 3x what I was expecting.  It is a pretty straight-forward removal of a dead tree in the back yard of our property in the Cole district of Denver, and I was thinking it was going to cost +/- $1k and the one quotation we received came back at $3k.  Any recommendations on tree removal companies and/or individuals who do this type of work are greatly appreciated.  As always, thank you very much for your assistance!

Take a few pics of the tree and post the job on Craigslist. Make it clear you won't consider anyone without insurance. Have them add your name to their insurance certificate to prove coverage is current before work begins. I had about 15 people respond for one of my jobs and got it done for $200. People are hungry for work - put the job out there and let them bid on it.

The good thing about removal is you don't need a real arborist to do it (as opposed to trimming a large tree- well worth paying for the arborist in that scenario IMO). Unless you're dealing with a pretty massive tree, a lot of landscaping companies will do this for less.

I'm sorry, I wish I hadn't lost the name of a guy who did a tree for me several years ago. I expected all sorts of complex equipment and hassle. He grabbed his machete and a rope, shimmied up the tree and had it out of there in a flash. It was quite amazing to watch. He told me he was from Equador and had built entire houses there using only his machete. (and no, I didn't ask him about insurance... )

Your PM probably isn't going to research that sort of thing for you though, just because of their own liability. I hope someone here can come up with a suggestion for you. If not, and you've got the time, you might research some smaller  landscapeing businesses yourself and see if you can get them to give you a quote. Unfortunately it's prime time for those guys right now as Spring has truly hit here

@Matthew Schroeder it really depends on the size of the tree and the location. They usually climb and take down in parts. If the large branched overhang structures they might need a crane or something to assist in the removal. Cranes are expensive. The other wild card can be if the tree is rotted or unsafe to climb. Again the solution is a crane.

Some of the cost relates to the company you choose. If they have employees verse contract labor or one man "self insured" shows. Insurance is expensive in the industry.
