How Do I Reference Another BP Member in a Post?

Maybe this is common knowledge but I'm not on very active on very many social media platforms and I couldn't find it on the BP forums. I'm sort of embarrassed to ask this question but since I'm still new to BP and haven't figured it out I'll ask it anyway. 

When reading the forums I'll see people post referencing another BP member (e.g. @Fake Person highlighted in blue) and then I see others (myself included) that will say @Fake Person that is not highlighted in blue. Is there something I'm not getting when trying to reference someone? I'm sure it's a simple answer but I haven't been able to figure it out.

@David K. Loveless Put the @ then type the persons name you want to tag. You will see a list below the text box of names to click on.
