The qualities you should look for in a real estate agent are as follows:
1. Listens to what you want.
2. Honest, with integrity and is ethical.
3. Available - keeps open lines of communication with you.
4. Well versed in using modern technology.
5. Has a very deep community knowledge for your area of interest.
6. Does the agent own any real estate?
7. Will agent present all offers - even if low?
8. Will agent meet all important deadlines?
9. Self-Starter - does not need your day-to-day supervision.
0. Will commission be reduced for providing volume in deals?
1. Agent puts your wants & needs above theirs (commission)?
2. Specializes in the specific type of property you want.
3. Pre-qualifies all Buyers so as not to tie up properties in vain.
There are many more out there, but these are some of the more important items to look for.

Chukwudi Motanya First off find someone that you feel comfortable with; and understands what you are looking for, someone that knows your local market and has experience in the type of property you are looking at, and one that will be honest with you. Also, they must be knowledgable of the entire process of real estate listings, sales, title etc., and someone that works aggressively to find what you need. That's a good starting point!

I like Dale's list above...
The one big thing I would add (both on the buyer and listing side) is that you want an agent that is well-networked and who knows a LOT of people. Most of our success has come because my wife has a way of meeting everyone who might have an effect on our business and making friends with them. They bring us deals, bring us buyers, bring us cookies, you name it.
Relationships are everything in this business...find an agent who understands that and has been successful in that area...
