Splitting realtor's commission?

This is my first post on the forums, being a very newbie to REI. My question relates to the purchase of our first home, not for investment. We have begun working with a realtor, but may have found a for sale by owner home on our own. Someone recommended asking the realtor to split the commission, and if they didn't want to, that we go with another realtor. Is the acceptable or common?
