23 and Ready to Invest

After pages and pages of informational material, I've come to the realization that there's only so much I can read and understand on my own. I'm really interested in learning more about investing in real estate and the path I should take as a 23-year-old prospective investor. I have the ambition and drive (and I'm steadily earning the money), I'm just in need of the proper resources and guidance to help direct me. Since graduating in 2012, I've been living at home and the money I've saved so far has motivated me to look into investing it. My goal is to purchase my first property by May 2013. However, I'm not quite sure what type would be best. I have the advantage of living at home, so the property I buy doesn't necessarily need to be for me to live in. Since I have a lot of options, I'm finding it difficult to narrow them down. What is the best route for me to take in terms of property type? What is some advice for someone my age who is just starting out? I appreciate any tips and experiences you have that can point me in the right direction. Thanks.
