Calgary Canada Benefits from joining REIN?

Question

Hello all! I'm new to REI, and I'm from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I've been poking my nose around in books, BiggerPockets, and a couple other Canadian forums/webinars. I currently don't have enough for a down payment, but within 2-3 years time I should have enough saved up to drop 20% on a down payment. I recently received a call from someone trying to recruit me to REIN.

I'm wondering if the membership cost is worth it? It's ~$3,000/yr, which seems very expensive, but obviously it's hard to put an ROI or a price on knowledge and networking. The main upside would definitely be the networking, but perhaps there are other cheaper alternatives available in Calgary?

In addition the caller mentioned I could look for a JV where someone would lend me the money, and I put in all the time and effort. But considering that I have virtually no experience, I was highly skeptical that anyone would want to partner up with me. Thoughts?

Hi Cole,

I have a couple friends part of the REIN (I am not a member). Their feedback has been that you get a big part of the value in the networking event, but now with COVID and events being mostly online, that value have decreased.

On my side, I haven't bought the membership and don't plan to but I attend some of their free webinar where you can get some value.

I guess it depends what you would be looking for out of the REIN. Is it education? Network?

What type of strategy are you envisioning?

If it is education and network, an avenue I would recommend is reaching out to investors that are already implementing that strategy. They are always happy to chat and share their wisdom.

@Cole Felske Hi Cole - there are definitely less expensive alternatives for great education and networking in Calgary. Shoot me a message and we can chat more - I’m in Canmore with a growing network in Calgary. I took a much less expensive route through Carolin Ricciardi’s Creative Real Eatate Academy (she is based in Calgary) and just bought my first fourplex with very little down. And you most likely don't want a partner in this business as it's hard to requalify when things go sour.
