Where to start

Hi everyone,

I am 21 years old and want to get started in real estate investing as a career. For the past 2 years I have been a chemical engineering student with very good grades. I have decided that I want to do something else with my life and working for myself appeals to me. I am very hard working and would regularly spend 100 hrs a week studying for school.

Anyways, I am very interested in real estate investing. My family has been discouraging and does not believe this is a viable career path. I want to believe that I can make it with a lot of hard work. So my question is where do I get started? I have already applied for low level jobs just to help save up money (I have 2.5k in savings). A also plan to work with a contractor to learn all about the general makeup houses and what to look for that could be a problem. I plan to do most of the renovation myself when first starting out.

I see basic advice on the internet to read as much as possible and I plan on doing that. One thing that I have noticed and applies to all of life is that nothing can replace experience. That is why I want to get started as fast as possible so even if I make mistakes I can learn from them.
