How to Find a Contractor

I am someone with absolutely no real estate knowledge other than one who owns his own condo. I am interested in learning about how I can build a modest investment portfolio so that in 10 years I hope to have enough passive income to support my living expenses. I hope to get into purchasing anything from SFHs to MFHs. My intentions are towards value added purchases and thus will need the help of a good contractor that I can trust with bidding and finishing out units. One who can advise me on what things could and should be improved as well as one who most invariably has my back. Am I asking too much? Any advice on how to learn other than by trial and error (which could wipe anyone out with a single misstep)?

Any books or podcasts to research? Thanks
