Investor Groups - Local REIA

Are there any local groups that actually get together to discuss topics without trying to sell training programs? For example, my wife and I went to a group meeting recently and they did the same pitch that we know we've heard at other meeting...

"Do you want to make money?"

"Yes!!!"

"Do you want to know these strategies etc.?"

"Yes!!!" "

"Then come join us at our weekend training event for only $1,000 etc."

We thought it'd be different because it's a local group. Is this just something we need to get used to? I am sure that some of the events are valuable and we would like to eventually attend a few.
